In Spanish we use HAY to indicate existence and ESTAR to indication location

Hay un estudiante en la clase = There is a student in the class (Existence)
El estudiante está delante de la ventana = The student is in front of the window (location)

For HAY, it is important to remember:

It has only one form for both singular and plural forms:

Hay un estudiante en clase /Hay cinco estudiantes en clase
There is a student in the class / There are five students in the class

It is used with indeterminate articles (uno, una) / numbers / adverbs (mucho):

Hay un perro en el parque / Hay dos perros en el parque /Hay muchos perros en el parque
There is a dog in the park/ There are two dogs in the park /There are many dogs in the park

For ESTAR, it is important to remember:

It has two forms: Está for singular, Están for plural forms:

El estudiante está delante de la ventana/ Los estudiantes están delante dela ventana
The student is in front of the window/ The students are in front of the window

It is used with determinant articles (el, la):

El perro está en el parque /Los perros están en el parque
The dog is in the park /The dogs are in the park
